Broken down into 90-minute live classes, we'll start with the basics of AI editing tools (what they are and how to use them) before moving on to the specific ways they can enhance your career. Lessons include lots of examples, group practices, and Q&A time. (No worries if you can't make it live. There will be recordings.)

Lesson 1
AI for Editors: An Introduction to the Future of Editing
Think of AI tools like ChatGPT as your assistant that can automate the tedious parts of your job so it becomes less about catching mistakes and more about fine-tuning the content. You can integrate AI tools into your existing copyediting workflow to supercharge your efficiency and improve your accuracy. AI can help with content editing, too, by offering suggestions and even writing your editorial reports. In the end, it means less grunt work, faster turnaround times, higher-quality projects, and happier clients and bosses.
In this introductory session, we’ll:

Lesson 2
AI Prompting Skills for Editors
Writing effective prompts (the instructions you give an AI tool) is the most essential AI for Editors skill. In this lesson, we'll delve deeper into the elements of a quality prompt and explore three pivotal prompt-engineering techniques:

Add Context: adding the right details and nuance
Refine: tweaking to achieve a tailored response
Lesson 3
AI for Copyediting
Ready to streamline your copyediting workflow with AI? Using the techniques and prompts we’ll learn in this class, AI can do your first editing pass for you in minutes, freeing you up to do a more refined second pass and finish the project faster. In this lesson, we’ll discuss strategies to focus prompts specifically for a copyeditor’s needs. Plus, we'll explore two transformative methods for editing with ChatGPT:
Editing Inside ChatGPT: The editGPT plugin gives copyeditors the power accept and reject ChatGPT’s edits directly inside the program. We’ll go through the setup process and tutorial together.

Comparing Docs: We’ll also review how to upload a document into ChatGPT and compare ChatGPT’s edited version to the original in Word. (Voilà—tracked changes!)
Lesson 4
AI for Content Editing
In this lesson, we'll cover how to prompt AI to assess content. Let AI handle your initial read-through, pinpointing the text's strengths and weaknesses so you know where to focus before you start page one. We'll go through use cases for corporate communications editors, medical editors, and fiction editors.
We'll also review ways to reframe AI's content assessment to streamline the feedback process by helping you quickly write editorial reports and other communications.

Lesson 5
Ethics in AI for Editors
The rapid adoption of AI in content creation has led to a need for policies and guidelines to address ethical, copyright, and security issues. Guest presenter and AI policy expert, Amy Frushour Kelly, will guide you through how to develop an AI content policy and AI use disclosures that define your position on the acceptable use of generative AI.

She will also cover how to handle other ethical situations you may encounter with AI technology, such as plagiarism, bias, data security, and more, using real-world examples as discussion topics.

AI for Macros
Macros are like a magic wand for Microsoft Word. These shortcuts can do many steps at once, making repetitive editing tasks quicker and easier.

Thanks to AI, gone are the days of scouring the internet for macro codes and crossing your fingers that they actually work. Now, ChatGPT can whip up custom macros for you in mere minutes. Whether you need project-specific macros or a set of "pre-flight" macros to kick off every new assignment, ChatGPT macros will help you unlock the full powers of Microsoft Word so you can do in a keystroke what used to take hours.

AI for Fact-Checking and Research
Yes, AI can assist with fact-checking and research. It now has the capability to cite its sources and browse the live web so it can use current information that you can verify. Plus, it can gather the information you need—and only the information you need—which will save you heaps of time tracking down sources one by one.
In this lesson, we'll learn:

AI Research Tools: We'll get acquainted with ChatGPT, Perplexity AI, and Consensus, learning how each tool functions, their unique features, and how they can be integrated into your editing workflow.
Prompting for Different Fact-Checking Levels: Whether it's a deep dive into a complex topic, verifying a single fact, or finding a group of related facts, you'll learn to efficiently guide AI to deliver precise results.

What happens after I join?
You will be emailed a receipt. Shortly before class begins, I will send more information about joining the class's online group and starting the course.
What if I can't attend live?
There will be recordings of every live class made available, and you can join our discussions online.
Do you have a refund policy?
Yes. Of course, I think you're going to love the course. But, if you are unsatisfied, you can request a refund up to 14 days after the course begins for AI for Editors.
Do I have to be a tech genius to understand the material?
Nope! I'm not a tech wiz either. That's the point. With AI for Editors, you can incorporate everything I'll teach as long as you have basic skills with computers and Microsoft Word. The most advanced technique involves Microsoft Word macros. If you've never used macros before, I'll give you resources to get you started. You got this.
Is there anything I need to buy for the course?
For AI for Editors, it's strongly recommended you purchase a subscription for the paid version of ChatGPT. You can do that through OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT. Without it, you won't see the program's full capabilities.
Which AI tools will we learn in class?
We'll cover ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, SciSpace, editGPT, and others. Most of our focus will be on ChatGPT.
How does the online group work?
Students will have exclusive access to the AI for Editors Slack group during the length of the course. In the group, there will be articles posted about AI ethics, copyright developments, AI for writers, and other related topics. It's also a place for students to ask questions, troubleshoot, share their AI experiments, and stay connected between lessons.
How much time will it take?
Each lesson is 90 minutes. It's recommended you spend time practicing your skills between lessons. How much time you spend is up to you.
